ADJUSTMENTS/ MANIPULATION

The term "adjustment" refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation (joint dysfunction), which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function.

Dr. Todd utilizes a few types of techniques to make an adjustment. One technique consists of manual manipulation (a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a vertebra), which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (cavitation). The sensation is usually relieving, though minor discomfort has been reported (that usually lasts for only a short time duration). Another technique is with the Activator tool, which is a high velocity, low force intrument. No twisting or popping is heard with this technique and is by far the most comforting way to be adjusted for those who have never been to a chiropractor and are worried about seeing one. Other techniques are related to soft tissue manipulation (massage) and physiotherapy modalities.

Dr. Todd always uses the most comfortable and easiest adjusting technique for his patients. He is often referred to as the gentle, but effective chiropractor by his patients.
